HOLDERNESS — A 64-year-old resident who was working beneath his truck was killed late Sunday afternoon when the truck rolled backward down his long driveway, dragging him 30 feet before it stopped, authorities said.

Police were not releasing the victim's name pending notification of his relatives Sunday night.

Rescue crews were called to 347 Route 175 just after 4 p.m. for an accident involving entrapment.

When they arrived, they found the man pinned beneath the truck, and there was evidence he had been dragged under it, said Holderness Fire Chief Eleanor Marden.

“It appears he was working under the truck outside his garage and it started to roll,” said Mardin, who said there was no evidence the victim was run over by the vehicle's tires.

“We don't know why the truck started to roll or what he was doing to his truck, but he apparently got caught under there and the truck dragged him about 30 feet,” she said.

Rescue crews found the victim's truck on the side of the long, winding driveway leading from the home on a small hill to Route 175. They found the victim pinned beneath the truck. Minutes later, they determined he was dead.

A state medical examiner was called to the scene. Members of the man's family arrived at about 5 p.m.

The town's 2011 property assessment document lists the owners of the home as Barry J. Byron and Jane E. Byron.

The 2,300-square-foot home at the top of the driveway is for sale.

A realtor's sign was at the bottom, and the home is listed on real estate Web sites as being for sale. The home is across the street from the Holderness Central School.

Investigators were on the scene for several hours. Police vehicles and fire trucks lined the driveway leading to the accident scene, preventing any access by the public as family members arrived.
