Officers lauded for feats of bravery
Three officers are being hailed for heroic acts this weekend, one for alerting residents to a raging fire and two for preventing a woman from jumping off the Bridge Street Bridge.
In the first incident, a bicyclist flagged down Officer Chris Cunningham about 3 a.m. Saturday to tell him about a fire at 94 South Maple St.
When Cunningham arrived on the scene, the building was engulfed in heavy flames and smoke, and several residents who had made it out of the burning structure told him there were people still inside in a basement apartment.
Cunningham went down to the cellar and kicked open two locked doors leading to separate bedrooms. A man was in one of the rooms and a woman in the other, who was reluctant to leave, according to Lt. Maureen Tessier.
Neither was aware of the fire raging above them.
Cunningham was able to get them out of the building and to safety.
Fire Investigator Peter Lennon said the building is a two-family but had an “illegal basement apartment” as well.
The fire started on a second-floor balcony and traveled up the exterior of the building to the roof. District Chief Robert Corbeil said residents had disposed of cigarettes in a plastic bucket on the balcony and the material ignited, causing the blaze.
In the second incident, on Saturday afternoon about 1:15 p.m., Officer Walter Feldhouse was on routine patrol when he saw a woman acting strangely near the railing of the Bridge Street Bridge.
As he and Officer John Cunningham approached her, the woman stepped up onto the railing and tried to climb over it.
Cunningham distracted the woman while Feldhouse grabbed her, and tried to pull her away from the railing. The woman put up a fight and tried to pull herself back towards the railing but, with Cunningham’s help, Feldhouse pulled the woman to safety.
She was taken involuntarily by ambulance to an area hospital for evaluation.
