Flaring cooking oil causes $10,000 in damage
MANCHESTER - A Massabesic Street apartment was damaged in a fire Tuesday after a tenant tried to move a pan of flaring oil to the bathroom to put it out, a fire official said.
The fire broke out about 9:15 a.m. when Keleigh Thompson, 20, of 683 Massabesic St., third floor, was cooking. The oil in the pan “flared up” and Thompson took it off the stove to bring to the nearby bathroom to extinguish it, according to District Fire Chief Al Poulin.
As she walked down the hallway toward the bathroom, however, the oil flared up and she dropped the pan. Poulin said flames ignited clothes hanging from a wall, set fire to a plastic door and igniting the bathroom.
Thompson ran downstairs to her landlord’s first-floor apartment and told him about the fire. He grabbed a fire extinguisher and ran up to put it out. In the meantime, his wife called 911.
Poulin said Morris’ brother also grabbed two more extinguishers and also tried to put out the blaze.
Fire crews arrived about 4 minutes after the 911 call and had the fire under control in about 10 minutes.
Damage is estimated at $10,000. Poulin said the apartment is habitable.
