Passenger seriously injured in Dover wreck at Scammel Bridge on Route 4
Police and firefighters responded around 4:45 a.m. after a westbound Chevrolet Silverado spun in front of an eastbound delivery truck, which struck the passenger side of the pick-up and pinned it to the railing, according to Assistant Fire Chief Eric Hagman.
'It hit just behind the cab, which was fortunate,' Hagman said, adding both the passenger and the driver of the Silverado were trapped inside due to the impact.
'The pick-up was stuck between the box truck and the bridge so it was hard for us to access the passenger,' Hagman said, adding firefighters had to use a winch to separate the two vehicles in order to free the two people.
Hagman said it took about 30 minutes to extricate the occupants. He added Dover ambulance crews transported the passenger, who sustained 'serious, but non-life-threatening injuries,' to Wentworth Douglass Hospital while both of the drivers were treated and released from the scene.
Hagman said the identities of the drivers and passengers have not been released, but police are investigating the accident. He added air bags deployed in both vehicles, which had to be towed away.
