Nashua musician stuns girlfriend and wows family with marriage proposal in song

NASHUA - For several weeks, Chris Robinson has been sneaking around on his girlfriend, spending extra hours at work and yes, lying straight to her face. But all of the mystery and secrecy came to a halt last Thursday when Robinson finally bit the bullet and asked his soulmate to walk down the aisle and become his lifelong partner.

It was a surprise well-worth keeping, despite all of the deceit that came along with it, said Robinson, 30. The local musician wrote a song for his girlfriend, Michelle Stickney, and planned to sing it to her during a performance at a Boston music club. She expected him to take the stage and sing the set he had been practicing around the house for several nights.

“I was so nervous,” admits Robinson, who had all of their friends and family gathered at Church, a restaurant and bar located near Fenway. “I had the ring in my pocket and I thought for sure she would notice it. But she had no idea. I don't even think she realized the song was for her.”

Stickney, who was expecting Robinson to propose during an upcoming vacation the two of them were planning, said she was incredibly worried when the disc jockey started playing the wrong music for her boyfriend.

“I just kept saying to myself, ‘It is okay baby. Just go with the flow,” said Stickney, acknowledging she wasn't really listening to the lyrics of the song he was performing.

Robinson had his eyes intensely set on Stickney when he finally took her hand and pulled her up onto the stage with him. Then, he began singing the chorus: “I wanna spend my whole life with you, walk down the aisle and say ‘I do.' Build a family, start a team. Live the dream - picket fence and porch swing. You and me, yeah, you and me.”

Still, Stickney said she just kept dancing on stage with her boyfriend, not quite realizing the seriousness of the moment until Robinson stopped singing, grabbed a small box out of his pocket and knelt down on one knee.

“At that point I was so in the moment with him. I was completely caught off guard,” said Stickney, 28. “I was full of emotion.

Obviously, I said ‘of course.'” The entire audience went crazy, according to Robinson, who said it was worth the wait. The couple has been dating for about a year-and-a-half, and say they were best friends from the moment they met.

Robinson, who works for U.S. Cellular, says he was preparing an imaginary vacation for the two of them to keep Stickney's mind off of all the secrecy and lies associated with the big proposal.

Stickney, a radiation therapy student at NHTI, says the trick worked, as she was pretty confident that Robinson would propose during their upcoming getaway. Instead, she says they now have something even more special to look forward to - their big wedding day. They are hoping for a December wedding close to Christmas time.

“I have always said that it is the little things that matter. All of the little details that went into this proposal made it truly amazing,” she said. “I am very inquisitive, so for him to have pulled this off was quite impressive.”

The couple has already been through so much since beginning their journey together. Just two months after they started dating, Stickney was placed on bed rest because of a health condition that placed pressure on her spinal cord and caused severe migraines.

Several months later she underwent surgery, which stopped all of the unmanageable headaches.

Robinson says it has been an unbelievable experience thus far, with a phenomenal future ahead for them.

He thanked his co-worker, Chris Hicks, who helped produce the song, along with hip hop artist Lyrical Plourde, who helped find a venue for the marriage proposal.
