3S Artspace studios in search of artists in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH — The studio spaces are definitely raw, but to a starving artist looking for a near downtown location, 3S Artspace is hoping they look like a sweet bargain.

The 16 available artist studio spaces are the newest evolution in the ongoing realization of 3S Artspace, which has recently started the transformation of the former Lollipop Tree location on Vaughan Street into a combination medium-sized performance space, non-commercial art gallery and farm-to-table restaurant.

The artist studio spaces are a new iteration of the plan made possible by the office layout of the second floor.

The studio spaces at 319 Vaughan St. will be available “as-is” for artists seeking space to “create at an affordable rate,” said Chris Greiner, 3S co-founder. Studios range in price from $90 to $350 per month, depending on the size and amenities, and will be available March 1.

He said at some point the second floor will be renovated into “proper” studio spaces, but for now, the raw spaces and the artists who find a way to use them will lay the “creative foundation” for what 3S Artspace hopes to be.

“Our intention with the studios is the same as with our Open Space series — we will showcase and support artists while we are building 3S,” co-founder John Gayle said. “No need to wait for a grand opening in order to start affecting the arts culture in Portsmouth. We're excited to invite artists to begin producing work right now, right under our own roof at 319 Vaughan.”

The organization also recently kicked off a $2.2 million capital campaign, and Greiner said walking a prospective donor through a space where people are creating is much more compelling than walking them through the space in its current, run-down condition.

3S is currently looking for artists interested in the studio spaces, and is welcoming applications from artists working with various media.

Greiner said preference will be given to artists working with nontoxic materials or to those who make an effort to reduce their medium's toxicity, because of the nature of some of the studio spaces.

Interested artists can apply at www.3sarts.org.

3S Artspace is expected to fully open this year.
