DOVER — A Somersworth woman who allegedly struck three children in a crosswalk with her car in January will be arraigned this morning on charges of negligent driving and failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

The former charge carries a $250-$500 penalty and the latter a $59 fine.

Police allege that Tina Conlon, 35, of 15 Spruce St., was playing with her radio and messaging on her phone when the accident happened about 6:48 a.m. on Jan. 10.

Three of Lori Wilson's four children were on their way to the school bus stop at the time, and were crossing at Portland Avenue and Rogers Street.

Alyssa, 16, Zach, 14, and Caleb, 10, were struck by Conlon's vehicle and were taken to Wentworth Douglas Hospital with injuries.

After news of Conlon's charges was made public, Lori Wilson said she was outraged that Conlon only faces a fine. During a previous interview she compared it to the penalty for a speeding ticket.

“It is unreal to me. All those laws with our cell phones, but because nobody died, it's OK?” she said.

The state's specific texting and driving law only carries a $100 fine.

Conlon was charged with a higher level violation because police allege a combination of factors, namely that she was both playing with the radio and with her phone, Dover Police Capt. Bill Breault has said. The extent of the children's injuries also was a factor. None was considered serious, he said. Two of the children did suffer severe concussions and other injuries and were kept in the hospital for two nights. Zach Wilson, who suffered injuries to his legs, was released from the hospital after one night.

All three children have returned to school.

Conlon is scheduled to be arraigned in the 7th Circuit District Court in Dover.
