PLAISTOW - A Plaistow woman is facing several charges after police say she snatched a shopper's purse outside Market Basket and then tried to hide in the restroom at Kohl's department store.

Katie Jean Regan, 24, of 227 Main St., was arrested Friday after police received a call about a purse snatching just after 4 p.m.

The victim told police she was walking out of the grocery store when the accused thief, later identified as Regan, walked up behind her and began a conversation.

Deputy police chief Kathleen Jones said Regan told the victim she didn't know where she had parked her car and followed the woman to her vehicle. At that point, Jones said Regan claimed she had just found her car parked next to the victim's vehicle. Regan helped the woman as she began to unload her groceries, but then grabbed her purse and began to flee, Jones said.

A man from Kingston who was in the parking lot heard the victim scream and rushed over to help. Jones said the Good Samaritan confronted Regan and grabbed the stolen purse as well as a butterfly knife that she held in her hand. Jones said the victim didn't report seeing a knife during the theft.

After the confrontation, Jones said Regan ran into Kohl's where she attempted to avoid capture by hiding in the women's restroom. She was found by police a short time later and charged with theft, disorderly conduct, criminal threatening, and being a felon in possession of a knife.

At the time of the theft, Jones said Regan was on probation in New Hampshire. She was also recently arrested in Methuen, Mass., but Jones didn't know the details of that arrest or the case that led to her probation.

Regan remains held at the Rockingham County jail and is scheduled to be arraigned at the 10th Circuit Court, Plaistow District Division, April 9 at 10 a.m.
