Monarchs top Admirals, knot series

Linden Vey scored two goals and the Manchester Monarchs snapped the Norfolk Admirals' 29-game winning streak with a 5-2 victory in Norfolk during the Eastern Conference quarterfinals on Saturday.

The win ties the best-of-five series at one game apiece and gives the eighth-seeded Monarchs the upper hand in the series over top-seeded Norfolk as the next three games will be played in Manchester, starting with Game 3 on Wednesday.

Riding the momentum of a strong third period on Friday night, the Monarchs took a 2-0 lead after one period of play Saturday on goals by Vey and Brandon Kozun.

They then weathered the storm in a second period dominated by the Admirals. Norfolk was a different team in the stanza as it outshot Manchester 22-10 and tied the game up on two goals by Alexandre Picard.

It may have been worse if not for the play of Manchester goalie Martin Jones, who held the league's top offense scoreless for more than 60 minutes after replacing Jeff Zatkoff in the second period on Friday night. Jones, who made 20 of his 37 saves in the second period, kept it a tie game, gave his team a chance to win, and Manchester did just that.

Robert Czarnik scored what ended up being the game winner 5:28 into the third, and then it was Vey who gave the Monarchs a little breathing room when he made it 4-2 with 3:44 left to play.

Andy Andreoff scored an empty-net goal with 2:01 remaining to round out the scoring.

The power-play struggles continued for the Monarchs. They were 0-for-7 on the man advantage on Saturday and are now 0-for-14 in the series, but two of their goals came during 4-on-4 situations.

The focus now shifts to Verizon Wireless Arena for the next three games, to be played on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. All games start at 7 p.m.
