THE BEAUTY of the Patriots' traditional draft strategy was always in its insurance. By trading out, moving down, and stockpiling picks, New England was essentially minimizing risks. They could withstand whiffing on Darius Butler or Jermaine Cunningham in the second round because having a dozen choices gave them a chance to grab guys like Julian Edelman and Brandon Deaderick in the seventh. The system was designed to cover up disappointments with depth.
