Judge told husband to get anger counseling
NEWPORT — James W. Perriello of Grantham was ordered by a Newport District Court Judge Bruce Cardello to receive anger management counseling in 2008 after being convicted of striking a man with his vehicle in Grantham.
Perriello, 41, now charged with shooting and killing his wife, Natalie, at their Grantham home last Thursday night, was convicted on a Class A misdemeanor simple assault charge in 2008 and received a suspended sentence of 12 months in the Sullivan County House of Correction, provided he attend counseling.
Court records show the man he hit suffered a head injury and bruising.
It also shows that a Wilmot woman sought a domestic violence order in 1998 to prevent Perriello from having contact with her, but that order was later dismissed.
The court also has records indicating that when Perriello was 18, he took a 14-year-old girl to Canada. He received a suspended sentence in the matter, but violated the terms and served about a year in jail.
There are no records to indicate that Natalie LaFlam Perriello, a Lebanon High School computer technology and personal finance teacher, had sought a domestic violence petition against her husband.
The couple had four children between 3 and 12; the children were in the house when the shooting happened, authorities said.
The court shows that Perriello also has a son, Jacob, 19, and that child support was sought by the child's mother, Bobbie Jo Cox of Longmont, Colo., when he was a juvenile.
Perriello is listed as the owner of Jakobson Concrete of Grantham. A listing for the company on the website Mantra indicates he is the sole employee and proprietor, with an estimated income of $85,000 a year.
Perriello is currently being held without bail.
He is expected to be in Newport Circuit Court Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. on a probable cause hearing.
