NH Fish and Game: Ill-prepared hiker rescued on Mt. Madison

LANCASTER - A Massachusetts man did everything wrong when he set out on a hike on Mt. Madison without enough food or water, then became lost and had a medical problem, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game.

Searchers found Mark Walsh, 49, of Sandwich, about 11 p.m. Monday a good distance off the Pine Link Trail on Mt. Madison in the White Mountain National Forest.

Walsh called 9-1-1 for help at 5:45 p.m. Monday to report he was lost and having medical issues.

Fish and Game conservation officers, Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue Team members, the caretaker for the Randolph Mountain Clubs, Gray Knob Cabin and AMC Search and Rescue members all hiked to the top of the mountain to search for Walsh.

When they found him, he was evaluated by a Fish and Game paramedic, given food and water and then hiked out.

Walsh did everything wrong, according to a Fish and Game press release. He left late in the day for the hike, not allowing enough time to complete it; he didn't eat and drink during the hike; he did not have enough water; he only had two T-shirts; he had no flashlight; he was wearing knee high rubber boots and not hiking foot wear; he had no back pack with essentials for survival; he went off trail.
