Allen Lessels' UNH Notebook: Wildcats recruit Central soccer player Chaput
A COUPLE MORE University of New Hampshire teams restocked their rosters last week with recruits due to arrive in Durham for the fall.
Andrew Chaput, a former standout at Manchester Central is one of a half dozen players joining the UNH soccer team.
Logan Mortenson, a forward out of South Jordan, Utah, has signed on as the latest addition to Bill Herrion's basketball squad.
Chaput led Manchester Central to an 18-0-1 record and state championship last fall and also plays for the Seacoast United program.
“We know Andrew real well,” said UNH coach Rob Thompson, who long has been involved with Seacoast United. “He's got a great attitude and he's a tough athlete and he's willing to learn.”
Chaput, who is 5-foot-10, played center midfield with Central last year and projects as a back, focusing on defense, with the Wildcats.
“He's not flashy, but he did a good job passing the ball for Central,” Thompson said. “He's not a big guy, but he can jump and he has speed. He's a leader and I like his intangibles. He's competitive and athletic. I think he's got the tools.”
Chaput is part of a recruiting class with a wide geographic range.
The others are A.J. Albers from Eagan, Minn., Lukas Goerigk of Berlin, Germany; Angel Maldonado of Lennox, Calif.; Liam O'Connor of Evergreen, Colo.; and Jesus Tedula of Zaragoza, Spain.
______
Mortenson, 6-foot-7 and 210 pounds, gives the Wildcats another skilled frontcourt player and provides a bit of insurance, too.
“He came out and visited last week and had a real good visit,” Herrion said. “We had been looking for a skilled perimeter guy. He can really shoot the three and has a good skill level. He can play the three or the four and I think he'll fit in well. He's a good get for us.”
Mortenson averaged 12 points, five rebounds and three assists a game last year for St. John's Northwestern Military Academy in Delafield, Wis. Prior to a season at St. John's, Mortenson played at Juan Diego Catholic High School in Draper, Utah.
Herrion said Mortenson provides part of a backup plan for what shapes up as a solid and potent frontcourt.
Ferg Myrick, who will be a senior, came on strong as last season progressed and he rebounded from a knee injury that ended his sophomore year.
But he tweaked his knee again in the final game of the season and was not able to participate in postseason basketball workouts.
His rehabbing has been going well lately in the last few weeks, Herrion said.
“Right now he's feeling good and in the offseason we've got to get him healthy,” Herrion said. “This is a big summer for Ferg. He has one year left and we need him healthy at 100 percent. We all know he's a talented offensive player and later in the year, in the last month of the season, he was probably the best defensive frontcourt player we had.”
Herrion has one scholarship remaining and may use it on a transfer.
Mortenson is one of four newcomers for next season. He joins 6-foot-3 guard Chris Orozco and 6-foot-7 forward Frank Okeke, who will be freshmen. Chris Pelcher, a 6-foot-10 center and transfer from Iona, becomes eligible after sitting out last season.
______
The men's and women's track teams competed in New England championships late last week at MIT.
Grad student Allison Letourneau won the 800 in a school record time of 2:08:81 and junior Keely Maguire won the 1500.
On the men's side, sophomore Kevin Greene won the 800 meters and senior Tyler Dinnan the 1500.
Next up for the Wildcats are the NCAA East Regionals in Jacksonville, Fla., on May 26-27.
______
It looks like Hockey East may have settled on its 12th team.
Reports are that an official decision that the University of Connecticut will join the league for the 2013-2014 could come as early as next month.
Notre Dame is joining the league for that season and Hockey East officials were hoping to get another member to stay at an even number of teams.
UConn currently plays in the Atlantic Hockey Association.
