Athlete of the Month: Dartmouth's Williamson joins elite company
For all that he accomplished individually — including a record-tying three Ivy League golf championships — Peter Williamson of Hanover felt like he came up short when Dartmouth College lost to Penn in a playoff for the Ivy League team title.
“I really wanted to get that win for the team,” Williamson said.
Golf is not usually considered a team sport, but it was partly the desire to help the Big Green win their first Ivy team title that led to Williamson’s decision to stay home for school. Dartmouth may not have won that championship, but you certainly can’t fault Williamson’s effort.
He joined Yale’s Bob Henitz (1990-92) as the only players in Ivy League history to win three individual titles and became just the second Dartmouth golfer to be named to the Ivy League first team four times.
The senior won his third title in impressive fashion, taking an eight-stroke victory with a three-round total of even-par 213 at the Galloway (N.J.) National Golf Club. It was part of an impressive April for Williamson, who won two of the four tournaments he entered and finished second in the other two.
For his efforts, Williamson was named the April Athlete of the Month, as voted by the New Hampshire Union Leader Board of Judges.
Williamson out-distanced a competitive field that included record-setting Wheaton College lacrosse player Hailey Colburn of Concord, St. Thomas Aquinas High School of Dover pitcher Jordan Bean and Franklin’s Jennifer Dorval, the New England Collegiate Conference softball pitcher of the year for Lesley College.
Others receiving votes were Concord High pitcher Eddie Dionne, Londonderry High lacrosse player Rob Hart, Plymouth State softball player Bekah Jackson of Nashua, Franklin Pierce University baseball player Zach Mathieu of Derry and Southern Maine baseball player Tucker White of Deerfield.
Getting an Ivy League education was certainly a big factor when Williamson chose Dartmouth, but the childhood dream of being a professional golfer was something that never left. After his recent success — which included advancing to the second round of the U.S. Amateur last August — Williamson is close.
He headed to Michigan today to get ready for the NCAA Division I regional tournament, which starts Thursday at the University of Michigan golf course in Ann Arbor. Williamson is the top seed among the 10 individuals invited to the regional.
One individual and five teams advance to the championship rounds May 29-June 3 at The Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
After that, Williamson will graduate in June and then head to Florida to work on his game and play in several high-profile amateur tournaments. He plans to go for his PGA Tour card at qualifying school in the fall.
“It’s always been a dream of mine,” Williamson said. “I obviously chose Dartmouth because I wanted to get an education, but I went to Dartmouth just in case golf didn’t work out.”
So far, things are working out pretty well.
