Fishers split twinbill with Rock Cats

Former Toronto 15-game winner Brett Cecil, making a bid to rejoin the Blue Jays’ starting rotation, allowed only two hits as the Fisher Cats defeated Twins affiliate New Britain, 3-0, in a doubleheader split at New Britain Stadium on Wednesday. In the nightcap, the Rock Cats snapped a tie game in the sixth inning and pulled away with a 6-3 trumph.

In Game 1, Mark Sobolewski cracked his Eastern League-leading ninth homer to give the Fisher Cats an early lead, and Mike McDade went deep in the fourth inning give Cecil more breathing room. The lefty worked five innings, notching four strikeouts, and reliever Aaron Loup pitched two innings for the save.

It was the first win of the year for Cecil (1-2, 5.06 ERA), bounced from Toronto’s starting rotation at the end of spring training. The Fisher Cats beat New Britain starter Steve Hirschfeld (2-4), who allowed three earned runs and scattered eight hits. Sobolewski, John Tolisano and Brian Jeroloman had two hits apiece. Leadoff man Ryan Goins continued to stay hot, poking a single and moving his average to .333.

Cecil allowed a Matt Rizzotti single in the second inning and a Chris Herrmann double in the fourth but never allowed a runner to reach third base. Loup retired the final six Rock Cats to lock down the win.

In the nightcap, New Britain (23-15) ralled for three runs against reliever Danny Farquhar in the sixth inning. Goins and Brad Glenn each homered for New Hampshire (15-22), which tied the game at 3-apiece in the fourth inning. Joel Carreno made his first start for New Hampshire and gave up a three-run homer to Estarlin De Los Santos in the second inning.
