Elliot seeks green light for bright sign in Londonderry

LONDONDERRY — As the Elliot Medical complex at the corner of Mammoth and Buttrick roads continues to expand, some concerns remain over the site’s proposed signage.

During Thursday night’s Heritage Commission meeting, much discussion focused on the new signs proposed for Elliot Phase 4.

Though the Heritage Commission is purely an advisory board, both the Planning Board and Town Council take their recommendations quite seriously.

Adam Wagner, a designer with Cube3 Studio, had met with the commission earlier this year, when some members expressed concerns over the proposed signage. In most cases, the commission discourages businesses from posting illuminated signs, instead favoring signs with outside lighting sources, meaning spotlights would shine on the sign at night rather than having it illuminated from within. Neon is particularly frowned upon.

Wagner said concerns over the brightly colored graphics also presented a problem, and plans for the signs have since been toned down.

Since that time, the sign plans have been altered to include a stone base, though hospital officials remained firm on their request for an internally illuminated sign. The 10-by-11 sign would feature the Elliot Medical Center’s logo up top, with hours for the urgent care center featured on the bottom of the sign.

Commissioners appeared pleased with the addition of a stone base, adding natural elements to the sign.

“I think it’s a vast improvement over the previous proposal,” Town Planner Cynthia May said.

Phase 4 will add an additional 34,372 square feet of office space to the medical campus, constructed in a three-story facility tucked behind Route 102.

The project will go before the Planning Board in mid-June.
