The weather is with us for the holiday weekend

The Memorial Day weekend is shaping up to be a winner weather-wise, with sun and warm temperatures creating great conditions for barbecues and other outdoor activities.

“Everything is predicated on the weather,” said B.J. “Doc” Noel, president of the Hampton Area Chamber of Commerce.

With decent weather expected, Noel anticipates a busy weekend at Hampton Beach as the holiday serves as the annual kick-off to the summer season.

Hotels, restaurants and other businesses along Ocean Boulevard were busy Thursday with painting and other landscaping projects in preparation for the big weekend.

The pick of the weekend will be Saturday. Skies will be partly to mostly sunny and temperatures are expected to climb into the upper 80s in southern New Hampshire to the 70s in the north, said Tom Hawley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Gray, Maine.

Sunday will be sunny as well with some clouds rolling in late in the day and a few showers at night, Hawley said. Temperatures Sunday are expected to be around 70 north and near 80 south.

A few showers may linger on Monday, but Hawley said they shouldn't affect the many Memorial day parades and other ceremonies planned across the state.

“It doesn't look like it's going to ruin the day. It's not going to be a washout,” he said.

That's also good news for those planning to get their yards ready for the summer season.

Workers at Landscapers Depot in Kingston are preparing for their busiest weekend of the year.

“We're expecting a very busy weekend and we're all geared up. Everybody wants to get their yards shipshape. It's a big weekend for planting,” said Kellie Greer, Landscapers Depot's operations manager.

With fuel prices still high, Greer said she thinks more people want to stay home and enjoy their own yards. One sign is the high demand for outdoor fire pits, especially stone pits.

“That's really big this year,” she said. “People this year are saying, 'Let's put money into the yard and let's enjoy it.' Everybody wasn't to be outside using their yards.”

They also want to enjoy things inside, and with temperatures nearby 90 on Saturday, appliance stores are ready to meet the demand as many people will likely install their air conditioners for the season.

Saturday sales are expected to be brisk at places like Appliance Warehouse in Seabrook, where workers have been stocking up, according to sales associate Fred Charland. Air conditioners are always big sellers this time of year, as are grills and patio furniture, he said.

Of course, Noel hopes people will leave their own yards and head to Hampton Beach to spend money and enjoy the recently completed $14.5 million redevelopment project. A gala celebration is planned for June 1 and June 2 to mark the completion, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, entertainment, fireworks and other activities planned.

The project features a new Seashell facility, renovated bathhouses, and numerous other improvements.

“It should be very, very interesting and people coming for the first time I'm sure will be amazed,” Noel said.
