Fisher Cat home runs light up Binghamton
New Hampshire bats lit up the Binghamton Mets, and righty Joel Carreno picked up his first win of the season as the Fisher Cats opened the road trip with a 9-3 win at NYSEG Stadium on Friday night. Carreno, who has pitched for the Blue Jays this season, allowed only two hits and fanned seven through five innings.
Brad Glenn and Brian Van Kirk each homered off Binghamton starter Darin Gorski, and New Hampshire (19-27) kept scoring against three Mets relievers. Van Kirk went 3-for-4, and Glenn (2-for-2) knocked in three runs. All nine Fisher Cats had at least one hit in perhaps the best clutch-hitting game of the year for New Hampshire. Glenn, Van Kirk, Mike McDade and Brad McElroy all collected two-out RBIs. Gorski (2-3) lost for the second straight time against New Hampshire. Glenn’s seventh homer of the year gave the visitors a 2-1 lead, and Van Kirk made it 4-1 with a blast in the fifth inning.
The Fisher Cats, winning back-to-back games for the first time since May 4-5, opened the scoring in the top of the second inning when Brad McElroy delivered a bases-loaded single.
Carreno made his third start for the Fisher Cats, improving to 1-1 with a 4.38 ERA. He gave up a solo homer to catcher Kai Gronauer but breezed through five innings. Righty Scott Gracey made his Double-A debut for the Fisher Cats, working two innings of relief and giving up one run. Aaron Loup pitched the eighth and ninth, yielding one run.
The series continues tonight at 7:05 as lefty Brett Cecil (2-2, 4.00 ERA) gets the start for New Hampshire, opposed by Mets righty Greg Peavey (3-1, 5.45 ERA).
