Pursuit ends in Ossipee arrest
OSSIPEE — A Middleton man was charged after leading police on a chase and causing an accident on Route 16 Friday afternoon.
Matthew McConnell, 27, was charged with driving while intoxicated (second offense), reckless driving, conduct after an accident, disobeying a police officer, driving after revocation or suspension (second offense), transporting alcoholic beverages, and possession of a controlled drug.
As of Saturday morning, he was still in custody at the Carroll County Jail, pending arraignment in the 3rd Circuit Court, District Division-Ossipee.
According to the New Hampshire State Police, Sgt. James Fogarty was patrolling northbound about 5:26 p.m. when he was forced to swerve to avoid being struck by McConnell’s vehicle, a Honda CRV, which was southbound in the northbound lane.
Fogarty turned to pursue the vehicle, but McConnell refused to stop and, after crossing into the southbound lane again in the area of Boulder Hill, struck a northbound motor home, damaging both vehicles but causing no injury to the other driver, police said.
When McConnell’s vehicle lost two tires and was unable to continue farther, McConnell, still refusing to submit to arrest, was taken into custody at Routes 16 and 171 in Ossipee, police said.
McConnell, saying he had suffered injuries in the collision, was treated at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro, then taken to Carroll County Jail.
Members of the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, the Ossipee Police Department, and other members of New Hampshire State Police, Troop E, assisted Fogarty in the pursuit and arrest.
