Jim Fennell's NH College Notebook: Granite State players dot summer baseball rosters
The summer college baseball season is about to get underway and New Hampshire players are finding their way into leagues across the country.
Zach Mathieu of Derry and Franklin Pierce University is headed as far west as possible to play with the Anchorage Bucs in the Alaskan Baseball League, but the majority of players are staying a lot closer to home.
At least five players with Granite State roots found their way into prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League. Outfielder Mike Montville of Portsmouth (Maryland) and pitchers Garrett Cole of Bedford (UMass Lowell) and Kyle Hunter of Dartmouth are signed to play for Orleans, pitcher Carson Cross of Brentwood (UConn) is headed to Hyannis and FPU catcher Matt Walsh is going to Wareham.
No less than eight teams in the New England Collegiate Baseball League will have players with New Hampshire ties playing for them this summer.
The Keene Swamp Bats have two hometown players in first baseman Brett Barrett (Southern Maine) and pitcher Chad Rafferty, who had a record-setting season at St. Joseph’s of Maine. Reliever Tyler Gauthier of Division II College World Series participant Southern New Hampshire will also be with the defending league champion.
The Laconia Muskrats, who lost to Keene in an all-New Hampshire league championship series, has pitcher Rob Blanc of FPU, while pitcher Nate Jones of Greenland (Wake Forest) signed with the Sanford Mainers.
The expanding Futures Collegiate Baseball League has a distinct New Hampshire. At last count, there are at least 31 players who come from New Hampshire or play for a New Hampshire college on FCBL rosters. Leading the way, natural, are the Nashua Silver Knights with 14 players and the Seacoast Mavericks of Rochester with 10.
A CAREER OF EXCELLENCE: Peter Williamson of Hanover probably didn’t end his college career the way he wanted to do — he was unable to advance out of the recent NCAA regional golf tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich. — but the Dartmouth senior put together four years for the Big Green that may never be matched.
He became only the second golfer in Ivy League history to win three individual Ivy League titles and, even though he didn’t win the regional, still finished fifth after birdies on the final three holes during the third and final round.
His body of work was recognized last week when he was awarded the Kenneth Archibald Prize during Dartmouth’s annual Celebration of Athletic Excellence.
The Archibald Prize is considered the college’s highest athletic honor and is awarded to a four-year senior who “is to be of exemplary athletic skill, of great academic prowess and of high moral character.”
THE BEYOND THE BORDERS SPOTLIGHT SHINES ON: Bobby Dattilo of Derry. The former New Hampshire high school lacrosse player of the year from Pinkerton Academy will ended his college career Friday by playing in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association’s 71st annual North-South Senior Games at Harvard. Dattilo was a football and lacrosse standout at Pinkerton who decided to pursue lacrosse at Hobart. He ended up being one of the most decorated players to come through the program, earning such honors this year as being on the Tewaaraton Award Watch list for best player in the country, being named a candidate for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award and getting drafted in the fourth round of the MLL draft by the Rochester Rattlers.
