Mishaps claim two holiday boaters
Two New Hampshire men — one from Merrimack and another from Londonderry — died aboard boats over Memorial Day weekend.
In Kingston, Eric Eskeland, 54, of Merrimack, died after the 17-foot powerboat he was operating on Newton's Country Pond collided with a 20-foot inboard powerboat around 11:20 p.m. Saturday, according to New Hampshire Marine Patrol. Five other adults aboard the boat Eskeland piloted were taken to the hospital.
Loretta Garrett, 46, of Bradford, Mass., received lacerations and internal injuries and was in good condition Monday evening at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.
Debra Eskeland, 55, of Merrimack, received a head injury and was taken to Beth Israel. Michael Sawyer, 32, of Nashua, suffered a head injury and multiple lacerations and was also taken to Beth Israel. A hospital spokesman did not have any information on Eskeland and Sawyer.
Scott Garrett, 45, of Bradford, Mass., was treated for multiple lacerations at Exeter Hospital and released. Chad Descoteaux, 33, of Hudson, received multiple lacerations and was treated at Lawrence (Mass.) General Hospital and released.
The driver of the other boat, Lawrence Buswell, 51, of Kingston, was uninjured.
Authorities continue to investigate what led to the accident.
In Rhode Island, Michael Gatanti, 56, of Londonderry, died early Saturday morning after apparently suffering a heart attack and falling into Point Judith Harbor in Narragansett.
His boat was anchored in the harbor. Gatanti was reportedly traveling to North Carolina with two other men and had stopped in Rhode Island the night before.
On Monday afternoon, Narragansett police referred all press inquiries to the Coast Guard and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.
According to Petty Officer Timothy Bames of the Point Judith U.S. Coast Guard station, the victim is believed to have lost consciousness before falling into the harbor shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday morning.
The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) received a call reporting a medical emergency in Point Judith's Harbor of Refuge at approximately 1:30 a.m., Gail Mastrati, DEM spokeswoman, said on Tuesday.
"Three people were on board the 30-foot boat, which was at anchor," said Mastrati.
DEM officials reported that the victim had been seated at the stern of the boat before falling backwards into the water.
Gatanti's two friends attempted to pull him back on board before Coast Guard and DEM officials arrived on the scene.
Emergency workers brought the unconscious Gatanti to the nearby Point Judith boathouse, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Gatanti was taken to South County Hospital where he later died, according to Mastrati.
The incident remains under investigation.
