Five hikers rescued from darkness in New Ipswich

NEW IPSWICH — Five out-of-state hikers had to be rescued after they got lost and didn't have flashlights to find their way out, authorities said.

Darkness overtook five hikers on Sunday night and they became disoriented while hiking the Wapack Trail, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game.

Authorities identified the hikers as Arianna Keating, 21, of New Orleans; Shey Guidry, 20, of Slidell, La.; Joshua Sasser, 18, of Pepperell, Mass.; and Nadia Keating, 16, and Holly Keating, 53, both of Townsend, Mass.

The hikers had some minor cuts and scrapes and were found to be ill prepared.

Conservation officers located the hikers at 11:30 p.m., gave them flashlights and escorted them to their vehicle at the Ashburnham State Forest trailhead, off Route 119 in Ashburnham Mass.

Fish and Game Officials reminded hikers to be prepared for unexpected events that could lead to extended stays after dark in the wilderness and to give yourself ample time to reach your destination and return safely.
