Gardeners get two ways to help animal shelter
MANCHESTER — Whether you’re an animal lover or not, the Manchester Animal Shelter has two ways you can indulge your green thumb and still help the pets awaiting adoption at the shelter this spring.
The Friends of the Manchester Animal Shelter are holding their sixth annual plant sale this Saturday, June 2, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the shelter, located at 490 Dunbarton Road.
Annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables, shrubs and trees will be offered for sale, with all proceeds benefiting the animals.
The plants are donated by local garden clubs, local businesses and local gardeners.
The Windham Garden Club will be hosting this year’s raffle table.
Each year, a few people who come for the plants go home with a pet as well.
For more information about the sale, including how to donate plants or raffle items, email plantsale@manchesteranimalshelter.org.
Gardeners can also help support the shelter by taking a garden tour.
Nancy Pratt of Londonderry has graciously opened her 2 1/2 acres of gardens to the public through June.
Forty-five years of gardening has resulted in beautiful groupings of azaleas, rhododendrons (many in colors not usually seen outside conservatories), mountain laurel and many varieties of perennials as they bloom in season. View the water feature, inspired by the Monet Gardens in France, with its first hatching of five mallard ducklings.
Tours are offered every weekend from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or weekdays by appointment (432-2336). Pratt advises visitors to come soon because the blooms are ahead of schedule this year.
A donation of $10 per visitor is requested, an all donations will go to the Manchester Animal Shelter.
The gardens are at 59 Noyes Road (off Mammoth Road) in Londonderry. Parking is limited and carpooling is recommended.
