Derry farmers market ready for a new season
DERRY — What started as a summer farmers market in 2010 has expanded to a nearly year-round endeavor in Derry.
Over the past year, the Derry Farmers Market has expanded to include a fall market before the holiday season and a winter market at West Running Brook Middle School.
However, the summer edition of the market is still the most popular, and the third annual summer farmers market kicks off at a new location on Wednesday, June 20, from 3 to 7 p.m.
For the past two years, the market has been held at the downtown pocket park, but this year it moves to the Derry Municipal Center parking lot at 14 Manning Street.
The new location should be able to accommodate a growing market, said Nicole Ferrante of the Parks and Recreation Department.
“One of our concerns was that construction could occur at some point during our market season to our old location on Broadway,” she said. “Instead of uprooting the market in the middle of a season we felt it was best to plan ahead and pick a new location. Also, we are lucky to say we are a growing farmers market. We will actually be starting this year with approximately 10 more vendors than last year and have, for the most part, outgrown our previous location.”
The market will feature more than 20 vendors offering local products, including fresh fruits and vegetable, farm-raised meat, seafood, flowers, chocolate and artisan products made in New Hampshire, according to farmers market director Bev Ferrante.
In addition to the array of local vendors, the market typically features music from local entertainers. For the grand opening on June 20, that entertainment will be provided by Karen Lincoln.
“During your visit, make sure to stop by the farmers market booth to pick up your market fan card, monthly newsletter, market map and more,” said Ferrante.
Ferrante said she is excited for the coming summer season as well as the opening of local farm stands.
“Nothing is better than the taste of fresh, locally grown produce,” she said. “I also love the family feel of our local farm stands. Visiting the farm is an adventure all its own, especially when I bring my grandchildren along.”
Vendors at this year's market include Amy's Sweet Pea Jewelry Design, Bittersweet Blessings, Candia Vineyards, Clayton's Way Farm, Country Dreams Farm, Debbie D's Homemade, DJ's Pure Natural Honey, Earth Spa Organics, Sugar House, For Crumbs Sake, Granite Ledge Coffee J & F Farms, Jamie's Sweet Temptations, Joey Treats, Kittredge Farm, Meadow View Farm, Michelle's Totally Awesome Gourmet Popcorn, the Mill Fudge Factory, Mountain View Manna, Northwood Naturals, Elen's Candles, Precision Laser Engraving, Seafood Express Co., Sticky Fingers Chocolates, Two Sisters Garlic and Want Waffles.
