Take a hike: There is so much of NH to see
This Saturday, June 2, is National Trails Day. Here is something to consider. If you visited one state park, historic site or natural area on this day each year, it would take you 66 years to visit them all.
It would take you more than a lifetime if you included other places such as the White Mountain National Forest, town-maintained trails, the state’s growing network of rail trails, and private lands such as the 5,000-acre Massabesic Audubon Center in Auburn.
There is so much to see in this little state. Do just one hike, ride or nature walk a month, and you will never have to visit the same place twice.
On Saturday, weather permitting, why not head out and hike a trail? Better yet, invite family and friends from out of state to join you and make a weekend of it — not just this weekend, but regularly.
A map of every state park is available online at www.nhstateparks.org. The U.S. Forest Service has a list of White Mountain National Forest trails and suggested hikes at www.fs.usda.gov/whitemountain. The Appalachian Mountain Club has a list of suggested outdoor activities and a guide to all of New Hampshire’s 4,000-foot peaks at its website, www.outdoors.org.
New Hampshire is a beautiful place. Get out and enjoy it.
