Fisher Cats fall in two-day, 14-inning game
It took 14 innings over two nights, but the Trenton Thunder emerged with a 3-2 win at home over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats Saturday night.
The game began on Friday and was tied 2-2 in the eighth inning before rain halted it. The teams picked up the action Saturday, but there was no scoring until Jose Pirela homered with one out in the bottom of the 14th inning to win the game.
The teams then had to play the regularly scheduled game afterwards, which ended too late for early editions of the New Hampshire Sunday News.
The Fisher Cats had a chance to take the lead in the top of the 14th when Brad Glenn and Brian Jeroloman hit back-to-back singles with one out. But Thunder pitcher Ryan Pope got Justin Jackson and Ryan Goins to strike out to end the threat.
New Hampshire’s Matt Daly, the fifth Fisher Cats pitcher in the game, got Abraham Almonte swinging to open the 14th before Pirela hit the ball over the left field fence to end the game. It was Pirela’s first homer of the season.
The Fisher Cats scored two runs in the eighth inning on Friday to tie the game at 2-2. Jeroloman walked to open the frame and moved to third on a double from Jackson. Goins followed with a triple to drive two runs home.
Trenton had taken a 2-0 lead with a pair in the bottom of the sixth. Kevin Mahoney singled to get things started and Jose Gil moved him over with a bunt.
Addison Maruszak doubled, scoring Mahoney. Maruszak stole third base and Pirela plated him on an infield single.
Pirela and Mahoney had three hits each for Trenton while Goins and Glenn picked up three hits each for New Hampshire.
The teams meet again today at 1:05 p.m. and again on Monday in a 10:35 a.m. game.
