Fitness center makes stretch to health care
MANCHESTER — While Manchester hospitals are opening expensive urgent care centers in the region, a noted health care entrepreneur is poised to quietly open an urgent care center at a fitness center next month.
Nick Vailas plans to open Express Med at the Executive Health & Sports Center, a high-end fitness center adjacent to the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport.
Vailas said it will bring a health-care component to a wellness-fitness delivery network being pioneered by Executive Center owner Michael S. Benton.
“Our goal is to keep you from becoming a medical disaster,” Vailas said.
The 10,000-square-foot space will also provide space for a primary care practice, Apple Physical Therapy and Bedford Occupational and Ambulatory Care.
Vailas said he plans to have two physicians on staff and service 50 urgent care patients a day. Express Med will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays, and shorter hours on weekends.
Vailas said Express Med will charge a single flat fee, rather than the separate doctor and facility fees charged at urgent care centers such as Elliot at River’s Edge.
“It will be a fraction, literally, of the Elliot,” Vailas said. Elliot spokesman Susanna Whitcher said Elliot had no comment.
Vailas said the location offers convenience, especially for Executive Club members but also for people coming in off the street.
The medical offices are part of a $4 million-plus renovation/expansion underway at the 5,000-member Executive Center.
The facility is adding an outdoor pool and hot tub, outdoor clay tennis courts, spas, a tiki bar, an indoor restaurant and expanded program offerings. Membership fees start at $65 a month.
The Executive Court is part of New Hampshire Wellness Network, a network of 15 fitness clubs in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
Benton said participants in the network’s 90 Days Commit to Get Fit program receive an exercise plan designed to address their health problems, frequent monitoring of vital signs and body-mass index, and wellness programs that focus on areas such as exercise, nutrition and stress reduction.
“We believe just like everyone should have a financial plan, everyone should have a wellness plan,” Benton said.
Vailas will now provide a doctor will be on-site to address problems such as a headache, fever or sore shoulder.
“It’s going to create a brand new image of who we are,” Benton said.
Benton and Vailas said the opening of the airport access road makes the Executive Center location convenient to people in Litchfield, Merrimack, Bedford, north Nashua and the West Side of Manchester.
