Mike Torres threw a complete-game shutout and drove in a late insurance run to lead No. 4 Manchester past No. 5 Timberlane of Plaistow 3-0 in NHIAA Division I playoff baseball action at Gill Stadium Sunday.
Torres struck out eight and delivered a suicide squeeze to score Tyler Burke with the third Memorial (15-5) run. Burke had reached on a bunt single that scored Jacob Boylan.
Burke scored the first run of the game in the second inning when Chaz Newton singled him home.
“We played how we did all year,” said Memorial coach Aaron Abood. “We got great pitching from Mike, great defense and used small ball to move guys around and get a couple runs.”
Memorial will play top-ranked Concord Thursday at 7 p.m. at Holman Stadium in Nashua.
North 1, Bishop Guertin 0: Louis Tarantino scored on Matt Fortin's sacrifice fly in the first inning and the North pitching trio of Kyle McCarthy, Matt Lipkind and Parker Jamerson made it stand up. Matt Morais pitched for Guertin (11-9). Both teams managed just two hits at the plate.
Concord 5, Trinity 4: The Crimson Tide scored three times inthe bottom of the fourth inning to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 5-4 lead. Eddie Dionne knocked in two of the runs with an RBI single and Graham McIntire singled home the other. Ben Bengtson was 3-for-3 for Concord.
Nick Beeson and Matt Holtshouser had RBI singles for Trinity in the third inning which put the Pioneers (10-10) up 4-2. Alex Currier pitched the complete game for Trinity allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits.
Division III
Hopkinton 7, Franklin 6: Sophomore pinch hitter Liam McNichalas slugged a walk off bases clearing double to give top seeded Hopkinton a home win Sunday in the Division III quarterfinals.
Hopkinton held a 4-3 lead going into the top of the seventh inning but gave up three runs to Franklin which took a 6-4 advantage with some small ball. Franklin was able to take advantage of a hit batter, a walk, an error, a botched squeeze bunt and a sacrifice fly to plate its three runs.
Jake Nelson singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh for Hopkinton. Sam Bonifant had an infield single an out later and Jay White drew a walk to load the bases. McNichalas then stepped to the plate and delivered his double to the gap.
Sam McManus and Nelson had two hits apiece for Hopkinton.
Campbell 3, Somersworth 0: No. 3 Campbell of Litchfield scored all three runs in the third inning and pitcher Connor Sahlin threw a complete-game shuout to lead the Cougars (15-4) past No. 11 Somersworth (11-8) Sunday.
A throwing error allowed two runs to score for Campbell in the third as Chuck Nield and Jackson Musco scored on the play. Cade Lacroiz started the inning with a single and scored on a Cody Caron bunt single.
Campbell will face the winner of tonight's game between No. 2 Monadnock of Swanzey and No. 7 Prospect Mountain.
Softball
Division I
Londonderry 10, Winnacunnet 0: No. 2 Londonderry improved to 18-3 with a rout of No. 7 Winnacunnet of Hampton (11-9) Sunday.
The Lancers managed just one hit over the first four innings before exploding for seven runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth.
Lindsey Bolduc hit a two-run homer and added a triple, driving in five runs on the day.
Colleen Clark went 3-4 with two runs and Rachel Kraytenburg hit a three-run home run.
Sam Corey got the complete game shutout win in the circle.
Salem 6, Dover 2: Winning pitcher Nicole Gubellini had an RBI single in a four run third inning for Salem and then had a double in a two run fifth as No. 1 Salem took care of No. 9 Dover.
Gubellini struck out seven from the mound and received strong games from Hannah Latham at third and Sarah Frahm at first.
Amanda Baron had a pair of hits and three RBI for the Blue Devils.
Division II
ConVal 5, Merrimack Valley 2: The seventh-seeded Cougars (12-6) of ConVal of Peterborough knocked off No. 2 Merrimack Valley (14-4) in Division II quarterfinal action Sunday.
Merrimack Valley had the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh but Courtney Fisher got the final out on a pop-up from India Thompson, who had two hits on the day and one long fly ball out.
Lauren Mackey (3-3, two RBIs), JoAllen Racicot (2-3, four RBIs) and Amanda Davey (3-3, two runs) led ConVal.
Divsion III
Campbell 4, Bow 0: Allie Nolan struck out seven and allowed just two hits in going the distance for top-ranked Campbell (18-0) of Litchfield Sunday.
Chelsea Caynon went 2-3 with two RBIs. No. 8 Bow ended the season at 11-7.
Stevens 3, Franklin 2: No. 3 Stevens of Claremont trailed No. 6 Franklin 2-0 before scoring three runs over the final three frames on Sunday.
Alyssa Nichols singled to start the bottom of the seventh for Stevens (18-1) and scored the winning run on a pair of errors by Franklin (13-6).
Franklin led early on a pair of doubles by Lexi Colpack and Jess Anderson.
Gilford 14, Farmington 4: Second-ranked Gilford remained undefeated at 18-0 with a win at home Sunday in the Division III quarterfinals. Farmington (10-8) led 3-0 in the first inning before Gilford answered back with four to claim the lead, highlighted by a Hannah Chase two-run homer.
Division IV
Profile 4, Moultonborough 0: At Bethlehem, Kate Austin hit a fourth inning two-run triple to spark a three-run burst as the Patriots notched the D-IV triumph and advanced to Tuesday's semifinals in Plymouth.
Austin was also the winning pitcher, firing a two-hitter while striking out seven. Caroline Eyman added two hits to Profile's attack.
