Div. III Boys' Lacrosse: Pelham, Hollis/Brookline to meet for crown
NASHUA – A balanced offense can go a long way, and this one has brought the Hollis/Brookline boys' lacrosse team all the way to the championship game.
Three Cavaliers scored three goals each to lead third-seeded Hollis/Brookline to a 12-8 win over No. 2 Plymouth in the Division III semifinals at Stellos Stadium on Sunday.
The win puts the Cavaliers (15-2) in the title game here on Tuesday against No. 4 Pelham, which was a 6-3 winner over top-seeded Derryfield in the late semifinal on Sunday. The championship is scheduled for 7 p.m.
In the first half, it was the tandem of Trevor Kerkhoff and Zach Rotkiewicz providing the offense with three goals each for the Cavaliers, then Patrick Doyle netted his three in the second half as his team secured the win.
“They're definitely a balanced team,” Plymouth coach Glenn Mausolf said. “They present a lot of different scoring threats.”
The Bobcats (14-2) were the ones with the early charge as they staked out to a 3-0 lead, but the Cavaliers managed to tie the game up 3-3 before the end of the first quarter and never trailed after that.
They built a 7-4 lead at the break before McKenzie Bird scored two goals 22 seconds apart in the third period to cut the advantage to one goal. He finished with a game-high five goals.
That rally made it 7-6, and then the Cavaliers finally broke out of their offensive lull when Doyle took a feed from Kerkhoff and beat Bobcat goalie Dylan McIntosh (6 saves) to make it 8-6 with 4:07 left in the third.
It was the first goal in 9:33 for Hollis/Brookline.
“That was really important,” Kerkhoff said about that goal. “It's really a do or die situation.”
The Bobcats never got any closer. The Cavaliers scored the next two goals, one by Doyle and one by Connor Moynihan, and goalie Alvaro Guzman (14 saves) held his own to help his team punch a ticket for the championship.
Pelham 6, Derryfield 3: Fourth-seeded Pelham scored twice in the opening 37 seconds and never trailed on its way to a win over No. 1 Derryfield School in the late semifinal.
Pythons goalie Jake Diaz was the difference. He finished with 21 saves and the defense was solid in front of him as Pelham (14-2) held the Cougars (15-1) to a season-low in goals.
Alec Paradis scored three goals for Pelham, including the first two of the game. His first came just 16 seconds in and the second followed only 21 seconds later, giving the Pythons a 2-0 lead they would never surrender.
Jimmy O'Brien scored for the Cougars to cut the lead to one, but Pelham scored the nest two and it was a 4-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
That was more than enough of a lead for Diaz, who looked unbeatable at times. The Pythons led 4-1 at the break and 5-2 after three.
Keston Bearegard added two goals for the winners and Korey Lubinger netted one. Jimmy O'Brien, Grant Alenson and Griffin Phaneuf all scored one each for Derryfield. Mitchell Green made 11 saves for the Cougars.
