Fisher Cats snap six-game losing streak
Brad Glenn highlighted a five-run ninth inning with a bases-loaded double for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in an 8-4 victory over the host Trenton Thunder on Sunday afternoon.
New Hampshire (21-33) needed the last at-bat rally after giving up the lead in the bottom of the eighth when the Thunder plated three runs.
Fernando Hernandez pitched the first seven innings for the Fisher Cats, allowing only one run on three hits. He walked two and struck out four and seemed to be in good shape for the mound win, leading 3-1.
Trenton got to reliever Evan Englebrook for three runs in the eighth and a 4-3 lead. Jose Pirela’s double scored two of the Thunder’s runs while Zoilo Almonte had an RBI single.
Justin Jackson and Brad McElroy started the New Hampshire ninth with singles. Brian Bocock grounded to short and the Trenton throw home was too late to try and get Jackson with the tying run. Ryan Goins reached on an error and after a walk to Mike McDade, Glenn pounded his bases-clearing double.
Englebrook (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the win as the Fisher Cats snapped a six-losing streak, ending Trenton’s six-game win streak in the process. The Thunder had won both ends of a marathon doubleheader on Saturday, winning the opener in 14 innings and then taking the nightcap in 15.
The Fisher Cats put together back-to-back two out hits in the top of the first inning to score a run. Goins doubled and scored on a single by McDade for a 1-0 lead. A home run by Trenton’s Pirela in the first tied the game.
The game stayed tied at 1-1 until the top of the sixth. The Fisher Cats loaded the bases on two hits and a walk. Mark Sobolewski’s sacrifice fly knocked in the first of two runs. Jackson followed with an RBI single.
The teams finish the series with a 10:35 a.m. contest Monday. RHP Chad Jenkins (2-4, 4.98) will start for the Fisher Cats against LHP Shaeffer Hall (4-5, 3.48) for the Thunder.
