Shannon Bartlett is new Ashland Elementary School principal
ASHLAND — After going through an initial round of 23 candidates, the school board has chosen Shannon Bartlett as the elementary school's new principal.
Bartlett will replace Bill Tirone, who is retiring after serving the school for nearly 40 years, the past 29 as principal, said Phillip McCormack, superintendent of schools.
Bartlett comes to Ashland from the Shaker Regional School District, where she has been director of curriculum and assessment. She has also been assistant principal at Plymouth Elementary School and a language arts teach at Gilford Middle School.
“We had some very strong candidates, and it was a very comprehensive, thorough process, but we found an excellent choice in Shannon Bartlett,” McCormack said.
Bartlett will receive a salary of $80,000 a year, he said.
Bartlett should have a smooth transition, he said, thanks to the work Tirone is doing in preparing the school for his replacement.
“(Tirone) has built such a wonderful working relationship with everyone in the school and with the community, and he has tremendous pride in Ashland schools, so he's doing everything possible to make it a smooth change,” McCormack said.
Tirone arrived at Ashland Elementary School in 1972 as a physical education teacher and became principal in 1983. In the years that followed, he helped a small town elementary school with limited resources become a model for other schools, the superintendent said.
“I can't say enough for what he's done for that school and those students,” McCormack said.
His work and that of his staff has been officially recognized twice. In 2007, Ashland Elementary School was named New Hampshire School of the Year. In 2008, Tirone was named New Hampshire Principal of the Year.
He is pleased with the success of the school system.
“It was wonderful for the community to have our school named school of the year,” Tirone said. “That was something we'll always be proud of.”
What's next: Saturday, June 9, an Open House at the Ashland Elementary School to honor retiring Principal Bill Tirone.
