Navy suspects false alarm triggered today’s evacuation aboard USS Miami

KITTERY, Maine – Two weeks after a five-alarm fire occurred aboard the USS Miami, the nuclear submarine was evacuated as a precaution after a fire alarm sounded Wednesday morning.

Portsmouth Naval Shipyard firefighters responded at 8:55 a.m. to the Los Angeles-Class attack submarine, which has been undergoing repairs in dry dock since March 1. While nonessential personnel were evacuated from the submarine, firefighters did not detect any fire, smoke or injuries, according to Deb White, spokesman for the shipyard.

“It looks like a faulty alarm,” White said, adding firefighters will determine what caused the alarm to sound.

Meanwhile three teams of investigators are looking into the cause of the fire which began the evening of May 23. Firefighters from four states responded to aid the ship’s crew and local firefighters stationed at the shipyard to help extinguish the blaze about 10 hours later, in the early morning hours of May 24.

Maine Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, said Tuesday that preliminary estimates for repairing the USS Miami after the May 23-24 fire are in the $400 million range.

Based on initial estimates, the investigation is expected to be completed in the next week or two.
