Police seize 'bath salts', synthetic marijuana from Plaistow store

PLAISTOW - Police seized "bath salt" products and synthetic marijuana valued at more than $100,000 from a local convenience store Friday afternoon, authorities said.

The seizure followed a search warrant served at Foods Plus, 5 Plaistow Road, around 1 p.m. during an investigation into the alleged sale of bath salts, a controlled substance, police said in a press release.

The investigation began after police received information and complaints about store.

Through the investigation, Deputy Police Chief Kathleen Jones said they discovered that the business was selling bath salts containing ingredients that have been banned by the Drug Enforcement Agency.

“The ingestion of bath salts has contributed to deaths by overdose or suicide throughout the country. It can also cause psychotic, erratic or extreme behaviors in individuals as well as an increase in theft or robbery related incidents,” Jones said in a press release.

The seized evidence will be sent to a state laboratory for further analysis, Jones said, adding that charges could be filed against the business owners once the analysis is completed. No one answered the phone seeking comment Friday night.

The joint investigation was conducted by Plaistow detectives and the Rockingham County Sheriff's Department.

Anyone with concerns or information about bath salt abuse is urged to contact Detective George Wickson of the Plaistow Police Department at 382-1200 or gwickson@plaistow.com.
