Caregivers won’t ask for reconsideration of variance
MANCHESTER — A local organization that links volunteers with elderly people will be staying at its Bedford offices, after Manchester regulators turned down a variance last month.
Donny Guillemette, president and chief executive of CareGivers Inc., said Wednesday his organization has decided against requesting a reconsideration of the May decision by the Board of Zoning Adjustment.
He said the people looking to purchase CareGivers’ Harvey Road location in Bedford were not willing to wait any longer.
In April, CareGivers said it wanted to move to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 99 S. Mammoth Road. A variance was needed, however, because the city zones the property for residential use.
CareGivers provides non-medical, volunteer support for frail, elderly and disabled who live in their homes. The South Mammoth Road location would be used only for offices for its 12 employees and occasional meetings with volunteers. No care to clients would be provided there.
But the Zoning Board rejected the variance by a 5-0 vote, after a neighbor raised concerns about food storage and delivery at the site. CareGivers also distributes food to its clients, and it had hoped to eventually install a small walk-in refrigerator.
