Camping is a Father's Day idyll
These are some of the favorite camping locations for New Hampshire Union Leader reporter Ian Clark and his family:
Whit’s End Campground
Location: 140 Newman Drew Road, West Ossipee
What we like: Situated on the Bearcamp River at the base of Mount Whittier, Whit’s End offers a wide variety of campsites, many right on the river. While there is a pool, the real attraction is the river itself, which meanders through the campground. Lie on an inflatable raft at one end of the campground, and the river takes you lazily through to the other end.
Rates: $31-41 per night

Danforth Bay Camping and RV Resort
Location: 196 Shawtown Road, Freedom
What we like: With more than 300 campsites on 185 acres (some on the water) in the Mount Washington Valley, Danforth Bay offers one of the most scenic camping experiences you’ll find in New Hampshire. Be sure to hike nearby Mary’s Mountain for a great view.
Rates: $30-164 per night

Chocorua Camping Village
Location: 893 White Mountain Highway, Route 16, Chocorua
What we like: A nice balance between a rural state park and a family campground. Thanks to its nicely wooded campsites and waterfront sites, Chocorua offers a nice variety of activities in a great setting.
Rates: $36-71 per night

Twin Tamarack Campground
Location: 41 Twin Tamarack Road, New Hampton
What we like: It’s hard to beat the variety at Twin Tamarack, from shuffleboard courts to horseshoes to a hot tub. The campsites are also varied, with sunny open sites, wooded areas and cozy cabins to rent, as well.
Rates: $35-80 per night

Bear Brook State Park
Location: 157 Deerfield Road, Allenstown
What we like: Bear Brook offers just about everything you could want to do outdoors and is centrally located within the state, easily accessible from points north, south, east and west. Bear Brook goes beyond camping and also offers swimming, biking, canoeing, fishing and archery, and it also has a museum on site. The campsites are wooded, and at some you can find more secluded spots, if you prefer. Bear Brook also offers day-use passes if you just want to swim or, in the winter, cross-country ski.
Rates: $23 per night. Day-use fee is $4 for adults, $2 for kids ages 6-11. Kids under 5 and New Hampshire residents age 65 and older are free.
