BRENTWOOD — Ex-Salem Planning Board member Jeffrey Gray testified that he has an attraction to pregnant women, but denied he raped the Queens, N.Y., woman he met through a Craigslist advertisement last March.

Gray testified the woman initiated sex with him while staying at his rented, lakeside home in Windham, and encouraged it, playing pornography on his home computer.

A jury will begin deliberating Monday morning about whether Gray kidnapped and raped the woman between last March 8 and 9.

Gray faces one count of kidnapping and five counts of aggravated felonious sexual assaults. If the jury believes the woman's testimony, it's enough to convict Gray of the sexual assault.

Judge Marguerite Wageling sent jurors home for the weekend late Friday afternoon after instructing them how to apply the law while weighing evidence and testimony.

Gray, 50, was on the stand for roughly two hours on Friday, testifying about how he sought out a pregnant woman on Craigslist and had sex with the woman, who was 7½ months along at the time and looking for a roommate.

He said in sworn testimony his fetishes include wearing adult-sized diapers. He also claimed that he and the woman shared common sexual interests.

Under cross examination, Gray testified that he never asked the woman directly about them, but assumed so because of her e-mail handle: Mamita4upapi.

“I suspected it,” Gray testified, “but I didn't come out and ask it.”

Gray offered insistent testimony that he sent the woman back to New York after considering what was best for her and her baby.

“This isn't just about having sex with a pregnant woman,” Gray testified. “I legitimately wanted to help this woman.”

Gray testified that after her brief stay at his home, he concluded that he would end up caring for the baby — something his home business as a civil engineer wouldn't allow.

The woman testified that she posted an advertisement on Craigslist as a last hope to find a new home. She collected disability for suffering from chronic pain and could no longer live with her mother because it jeopardized her Section 8 housing, according to court testimony.

Defense lawyer Anthony Naro argued that the woman fabricated the story because Gray had flown her to New Hampshire, only to send her packing a few days later when Gray concluded the newfound relationship wouldn't work.

The woman had no visible bruising on her head or face despite claims Gray repeatedly punched her in the head, putting her in fear of her baby being harmed, Naro argued.

He encouraged jurors to be skeptical of the woman because after the alleged assault, she placed another online advertisement seeking a roommate on a Christian-based web site.
