MANCHESTER - A 30-year-old woman was mocked by a telephone scammer who took her for nearly $400 after telling her she won millions in a sweepstakes.

Police said the woman was called about 6 p.m. last Thursday by a man named “Michael,” who told her she won $2.5 million in the Publisher’s Clearinghouse Sweepstakes.

He said in order for him to process her winnings, she needed to purchase a Green Dot MoneyPak reloadable money card and provide him with the PIN number. The woman then spoke to a manager who identified himself as “Mr. Morris.” He verified her need to assist with the processing in order to get her winnings.

The woman went to the store, bought the card for $398 and then called Michael back to give him the PIN number. The next day, she received a mocking text from the caller at the same number. It was then she realized she’d been taken.

Police said residents should be aware that scams conducted over the phone are prevalent, and they should not be giving unidentified callers access to their personal information or assets.
