Special visitors planned for Sail Portsmouth
PORTSMOUTH — Sail Portsmouth 2012 will mark the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 with the “Pride of Baltimore II,” a replica of the type of regional clipper ship that helped the United States defeat the British.
The Pride of Baltimore II will be joined by a replica of the Revolutionary War era sloop-of- war “Providence,” during the annual tall ships event, which will return to the commercial fishing pier this year, allowing visitors to see the masts of the detailed ships from vantage points on Peirce Island and in Prescott Park while they are in town from July 12 to 15
“Providence” also has a Portsmouth connection, as it was the first command for Capt. John Paul Jones, said Larry Job, vice-president of the Piscataqua Maritime Commission.
The original “Providence” participated in 60 engagements with British ships and sank or seized 40 enemy vessels.
The Portsmouth Historical Society is currently housed in a home once occupied by John Paul Jones himself.
Job has long had an interest in sailing, and talks about the ships through story and history, providing a contextual background for their arrival.
This educational element will be re-created during the festival July 13 to 15 when the University of New Hampshire Marine Docents provide regular presentations about the history of the visiting tall ships.
Deck tours and day sail opportunities are available on both ships July 13, 14 and 15 from the Commercial Fish Pier on Peirce Island in Portsmouth. Deck tours cost $9 per person and $25 per family.
Day sails are being offered on Thursday, July 12, at 9 a.m., noon, 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. and leave from the old Coast Guard Station in New Castle. Tickets are $50 per person.
There are also still a few places left for the Parade of Sail on Friday morning. The cost is $75 per person.
Tickets for both are available by visiting www.pride2.org, clicking on “join us for a day sail” and scrolling down to “Sail Portsmouth.”
The Captains’ Reception on Saturday night is also open to the public.
