Softball benefits veterans memorial
HOOKSETT — The Hooksett Heritage Commission and Merrill-Follansbee American Legion Post 37 present an alternative tonight for baseball fans dissatisfied with the Red Sox’s lackluster season.
The police department, playing as the Blue Knights, and the fire department, playing as the Fire Brigade, will square off at Donati Field at 6 p.m. in a benefit softball game to fund the refurbishment of the town’s Veterans’ Memorial.
The teams are rounded out by members of the Town Council and employees of the library and Department of Public Works.
District 1 Councilor Todd Lizotte, whose play is meant to show support for both the police and fire departments, will join the Blue Knights. Lizotte hopes to serve as a role model for his sons and the other children he coaches in baseball.
“Every game day, when I see my sons out there playing, I’m constantly yelling at them to ‘keep your head in the game,’ ‘keep your head down,’ ‘keep your eye on the ball’ and all those things,” Lizotte said. “I wanted to give my kids the opportunity to sit on the sidelines and scream those things at me.”
The game was the idea of Heritage Commission chair Kathie Northrup, who wanted to come up with a novel fundraiser for upgrades to the Veterans’ Memorial on Veterans’ Drive, adjacent to the Congregational Church of Hooksett.
“The town was very receptive to it,” Northrup said. “It’s a good cause, and it’s a nice evening out. There seems to be a lot of nice interest.”
The American Legion and the Heritage Commission are partnering to refurbish the bronze plaques listing the names of local veterans from both World Wars and the Civil War, as well as to replace the deteriorating mortar in the granite obelisk supporting the plaques. The total fundraising goal for the project is $5,000.
“When we took this on, it started as a community project,” said Northrup. “This is one way we can do something for our military.”
Tickets cost $5 and are available at the door. Admission is free for children under 14 years old.
The Hooksett Youth Athletic Association will run a concession stand to also benefit the memorial refurbishment. Both the concession stand and the field open at 5:30 p.m.
