PORTSMOUTH — A utility worker was injured and power cut off to several downtown streets on Friday morning.

Fire officials said a worker was up in the bucket of a utility truck swapping power from one pole to another when something went wrong. The worker sustained second- and third-degree burns.

Emergency crews were called around 9:45 a.m. Fire Capt. Kenneth Smith said the worker was conscious and alert, and was able to walk to the ambulance.

The incident happened at the corner of State and Marcy streets near the Prescott Park parking lot. Smith said the accident caused a power surge and cut off power to many in the downtown area, including businesses, until about 4 p.m.

Smith said on Friday evening that the man had been transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital, but he did not have an update on his injuries. He also did not release the name of the victim, who was working for a private contractor at the time of the accident.

Public Service of New Hampshire and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration were called into the scene, Smith said.
