Joe McQuaid's Publisher's Notebook: Some moving on, but our team's still No. 1
Some of the people who have brought you the news are moving on. One of them, Paul Lacaillade, has moved on bigtime. “P. Lac” worked here for 50 years and then enjoyed a great stretch of retirement before passing on a week ago at the age of 97. That's not a typo, although Paul caught his share of them in his long career with us as a reporter and editor.
While Paul has gone on to his heavenly reward, some other talented people here are just moving on to other earthly pursuits.
Business Editor Bill Regan has been one half of the best duo since Spahn and Sain. Too obscure a reference for you? How about Huntley and Brinkley? Sears and Roebuck, perhaps?
Anyway, Regan and business reporter Denis Paiste have been producing comprehensive stories on all manner of New Hampshire business for us for years. Bill's leaving (I'm guessing more golf is somewhere in his future) will mean Denis will have to break in a new editor. Get to it, Denis.
Teresa Robinson has made great strides for us as head of Union Leader Events and Community Relations and I don't just mean great strides as in her Sunday News column on running.
I'm hoping she will still be able to do that column, but she is taking a job with Fidelity in Merrimack, which is our loss and Fidelity's gain.
Since my daughter was Teresa's predecessor and had a hand in her hiring, I gave her a hard time about Teresa leaving after barely being here.
“Um, she was here eight years,” said the former little Missy.
Ooops. Time really does fly.
Beth Lamontagne Hall has been covering City Hall for us but has decided her daycare services are going to be needed elsewhere soon. We wish her the best.
Also this summer we are losing to retirement some of the behind-the-scenes people whose names you wouldn't recognize but without whose work you really wouldn't get the news. My best wishes and thanks go to all of them.
The means and manner in which we get the news to you continues to change and expand and we continue to have the best team to bring you New Hampshire news and information.
We are a bit more than one month into our new UnionLeader.com and NewHampshire.com website setup. I have some bad news for the nattering nabobs of negativism who predicted online users would vanish: They haven't.
Our number of “visitors” remains as strong as ever. We think one of the reasons is that the websites now offer much more content. If you are a subscriber to the newspaper, make sure to register your account online so that you can have complete access to both UnionLeader.com and the e-edition. That way you can take your “paper” with you on that beach or road trip this summer.
