Goffstown school moves toward change with committee
GOFFSTOWN — A committee to study the practices of the administration at Mountain View Middle School will be formed, then a consultant hired to figure out how to improve the school.
Parents, teachers and support staff are asked to volunteer their time for a few meetings this summer and once a month in the fall. Parents should have children in school now or who attended MVMS previously. Anyone who volunteers is asked to have some knowledge of the programs and services at the school.
“We are very pleased to be able to move forward in this process,” said Superintendent Stacey Buckley. “We’re looking forward to working with everybody to explore and look at the strengths and needs of Mountain View Middle School.”
There are three phases to the plan, according to a press release from the Goffstown School Board:
--Phase I: Work will take place this summer with completion slated for mid-August.
Assistant Superintendents MaryClaire Barry and Brian Balke will work with the Phase 1 Committee to review best practices for middle schools, identify relevant questions for inquiry, and begin the data gathering process.
--Phase II: Hire an outside consultant.
The consultant will work with MVMS staff, MVMS students, and the greater educational community to gather data that has not been collected during the Phase I work. The consultant will analyze and interpret Phase I and Phase II data and provide a comprehensive assessment of strengths and needs.
It is anticipated that Phase II will be completed by late fall. Phase I Committee members will meet as needed throughout Phase II to assist the consultant in gathering data and making recommendations.
--Phase III: Planning and implementation of the recommendations resulting from the strengths and needs assessment.
There are two scheduled days — July 26 and Aug. 9 — to begin work. Participants need to be available to attend both days. It is possible that there may also be some work, in the form of data gathering between the two meetings, according to the release.
The Phase I Committee will be composed of teachers from each grade level at MVMS, special education teachers from MVMS, unified arts teachers from MVMS, and parents. It is anticipated that two parents from each community (Goffstown, Dunbarton and New Boston) will participate. In addition, a Goffstown School Board representative, a Goffstown Education Association representative and a representative from the parent-teacher organization will be a part of this important work.
