Music added to Old Home Week events in Ossipee
OSSIPEE — Fireworks, lots of food, music and a huge Independence Day parade are just some of the highlights of the town’s upcoming Old Home Week.
Old Home Week Board member and Recreation Director Peter Waugh said the committee added more music this year, with performances by the Swift River Jazz Band and others.
Events officially begin this Friday, June 29, with a pie social and hymn sing at the Water Village Community Church at Pork Hill Road and Route 171. A smorgasbord of homemade pies will be served. This event is free.
The schedule continues on Saturday, June 30, with a fishing derby at the Mill Pond from 8 a.m. to noon; the historic Chickville Church will hold an open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Ossipee Pubilc Library will host a Book Cellar and Bake Sale on 10 a.m. to noon. Meals for the evening include a free community dinner at the First Congregational Church of Ossipee on Route 16B, and a turkey dinner at Ossipee Concerned Citizens on Dore Street.
Both meals begin at 5 p.m. The round up the day’s events, attend a Variety Show at 7 p.m. at the Ossipee Central School Gym on Main Street in Center Ossipee.
Sunday starts with a blueberry pancake breakfast at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on Moultonville Road in Center Ossipee. For kids, there’s a “Touch A Truck” event at the town hall parking lot on Main Street. The recreation department and the Mount Washington Valley Radio Control Club will host Gym Flyers, an indoor model aviation flying activity, at the town hall from 4 to 7 p.m.
The Swift River Jazz Band ends the evening with a concert at 6 p.m. at Veteran’s Memorial Park in the front lawn of the town hall on Main Street. The concert will move indoors if it rains.
The fun continues Monday with a Bike Inspection and Safety Course at the town hall parking lot. The Ossipee Public Library will screen the local movie, “The Hamlet of Moultonville,” at 2, 4 and 6 p.m. The DVD, produced by Joe Bradley of Pocket Mountain Video LLC, covers the early history of what is now Moultonville Road in Ossipee.
The annual Art Show takes place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in town hall. Pat Jones’ students will display their works.
An Ice Cream Social will be held at the Victorian House at 50 Main St., from 5 to 7 p.m. Music by the East Bay Jazz Ensemble tops off the evening with a concert at 7 p.m. in front of town hall.
July 3, the Norman Magic Experience will perform at the town hall at 10:30 a.m.
The fun builds into an Independence Day extravaganza on Wednesday, July 4, with an Independence Day parade at 10 a.m. Line up begins at 9 a.m. The parade route is from Dorr’s Corner and Moultonville Road, down to Main Street and town hall. Rain date is July 5.
The Family Fun Fair continues from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ossipee Concerned Citizens on Dore Street, with flea market, food, live music and kids games. The Ossipee Citizen of the Year and the Parade Awards will be presented during this fair.
The fireworks festival begins at 5 p.m. through 10:30 p.m. at Constitution Park on Long Sands Road off Route 25 in Center Ossipee.
A wide variety of food will be offers from local nonprofits. The fireworks show, described as “the biggest and best fireworks display in Carroll County” starts at 9:30 p.m. Waugh said that in some years, the show has attracted between 4,000 and 5,000 spectators.
“Cruise Night” will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Yankee Smokehouse on Route 16 and 25. Classic cars and trucks will gather and show their chrome.
The band, Bradigan, will hold a concert the following evening, Friday, July 6, at Veteran’s Memorial Park in front of town hall, performing original and traditional Irish, Scottish and American Folk music.
Events on Saturday include a yard sale, a book sale, the Dinner Bell meal at the First Congregational Church, and a Bluegrass Country Boys concert at 6 p.m. at Veteran’s Memorial Park.
