HOPKINTON — A three-alarm fire destroyed the town's highway garage Wednesday evening.
Jim O'Brien, chairman of the town Board of Selectment, said the fire was reported by a passerby at 6:26 p.m. Wednesday. Responding fire crews worked to stop the fire from spreading to the nearby fuel depot, but several Highway Department vehicles and pieces of equipment were destroyed or damaged.
He said the building on Public Works Road, which had undergone recent expansions, is “totaled” after the center section of its roof collapsed.
The fire was declared under control about 8 p.m., he said.
The State Fire Marshal was expected to begin investigating the fire's cause today.
Fire departments from Hopkinton, Concord, Bradford, Hillsborough, Henniker, Bow and Salisbury responded to the fire.
