Quick, Crosby earn big new contracts
The Los Angeles Kings agreed to a 10-year, $58 million deal with Jonathan Quick that will be officially signed Sunday, the first day of the NHL league year.
The goaltender, a former Manchester Monarch, won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP of the Stanley Cup Finals and was named the Kings’ most valuable player in the regular season.
Drafted 72nd overall in the 2005 draft, Quick is 26.
Quick had a 16-4 record in the playoffs with a 1.41 goals-against average, a .946 save percentage and three shutouts. Quick never allowed more than three goals in a playoff game and allowed two or fewer goals in 18 of his 20 games.
In Quick’s four postseason losses, the Kings scored a total of three goals.
Quick set two franchise records last season. He became the first Kings goalie to record at least 30 victories in three consecutive seasons. Quick also recorded his ninth shutout late in the regular season to break a tie with Rogie Vachon for the single-season regular-season record.
Report: Crosby, Pens agree to $104.4m deal
The Pittsburgh Penguins and Sidney Crosby are putting the finishing touches on a new contract that will pay him $104.4 million over 12 years.
The Penguins announced the deal Thursday on their website. The contract will pay an average of about $8.7 million a season, although Crosby will receive more money in the early years of the deal. The new contract would go into effect for the 2013-14 season.
Crosby is not having any concussion-related problems and for the first time in many years is having normal summer workouts.
CBC reported in early June that a 10-plus-year deal was in the works.
His summer workouts were cut short in 2008 and 2009 because the Penguins played into June. Also, he was fatigued in 2010 following the Olympics and the Penguins playing two playoff rounds.
“Sidney wanted to be a Penguin forever,” said Pat Brisson, Crosby’s agent, according to the Penguins website. “He went to this franchise when the franchise was at the bottom. He was part of the build up. He is emotionally attached to the fans, the city of Pittsburgh and the organization.”
