Ortiz lifts Sox in 10th
All-Star David Ortiz delivered a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning as visiting Boston rallied for a 2-1 victory, salvaging a split of the four-game series in Seattle.
After Ryan Kalish doubled high off the right-field wall with one out off Brandon League (0-5), Dustin Pedroia singled to right. Ortiz followed with a fly ball to the edge of the warning track off Lucas Luetge to score Kalish.
Pedroia hit his first homer since May 10, a solo shot in the eighth inning into the Red Sox bullpen in left to tie the game 1-1.
Vicente Padilla (2-0) pitched a scoreless ninth inning and Alfredo Aceves worked a perfect 10th for his 19th save in 22 chances.
Boston starter Felix Doubront allowed a run, three hits and walked five while throwing 103 pitches in 4 1/3 innings in his third straight sub-par outing.
Jason Vargas, who lost at Boston earlier this season, gave the Mariners eight much-needed innings after the bullpen pitched 8 1/3 Saturday. He allowed five hits and struck out six.
With runners on first and third and none out in the third inning, Ichiro Suzuki lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score Chone Figgins, who led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on Brendan Ryan's single.
There were only 14 runs scored in the series (nine by Boston), which included a pair of walk-off wins by the Mariners.
Notes: Ortiz was the only Red Sox player named to the American League All-Star team, the first time since 2001 they will have only one All-Star (Manny Ramirez). Right-hander Felix Hernandez is Seattle's lone representative … The Mariners placed right-hander Erasmo Ramirez on the 15-day disabled list (elbow) after he left Saturday's start in the third inning. … Doubront entered the game with the highest run support in baseball at 8.44. … Boston improved to 18-9 against left-handed starters. … Seattle has scored nine runs in its last eight games. … The Red Sox lead the season series 4-2 and have outscored the Mariners 20-6. … Boston shortstop Mike Aviles was scratched from the lineup because of illness. … The Red Sox's Adrian Gonzalez went 1-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 12 games.
