Nashua Library plays host to series of outdoor concerts
NASHUA — The Nashua Public Library is offering a full slate of concerts this summer under two long-running programs: Bach's Lunch and Summer Concerts on Library Plaza.
“The outdoor concerts will have world music or jazz or folk or blues; kind of eclectic programs,” said Carol Eyman, the library's Community Services Coordinator.
The Summer Concerts will take place Thursdays at 7 p.m., from this Thursday through Aug. 2.
The Boston quartet Annalivia begin the series, playing traditional Anglo-Celtic ballad and fiddle music “with a groove-centric, contemporary flair,” on July 5.
Reggae ensemble Jah Spirit will play July 12, the BaZa blues quartet will cover classic Delta- and Chicago-style artists on July 26, and Compaq Big Band will play tunes from the 1930s and '40s by composers Glenn Miller, Artie Shaw, and others Aug. 2.
“I find the big bands are really popular and they draw the biggest crowd,” Eyman said.
Playing on July 19, Massachusetts-based Grupo Fantasia is one of the performances not to be missed. According to the band's manager Karen Wagner, Fantasia plays “the hottest pop Latin right now that's on the market.”
The group covers the work of performers like Juan Luis Guerra, Elvis Crespo, Hector de la Costa, Oscar D'Leon and the Buena Vista Social Club.
“This is a traditional Latin band,” said Karen Wagner, the band's manager, “and they'll be performing traditional Latin songs like, merengue, salsa, cumbia and bachata.”
“Lots of cumbia for all the Colombian people.”
The lead singer, Wagner's husband Angel Wagner, is the band's leader and founder.
He plays over 30 instruments.
The band performs 150 to 200 gigs a year in clubs, colleges and other venues.
Bringing classical concerts to downtown, Bach's Lunch started in 1989.
The idea was that people who work nearby could slip away for a noontime concert, Eyman said.
Performers are chosen by a committee consisting of Symphony of New Hampshire member Greg Newton. Eyman said that through his work for the symphony, Newton knows a large number of musicians in the area and is able to draw from the best around.
From July 11 to Aug. 15, the hour-long Bach's Lunch concerts will take place every Wednesday at noon.
On July 11, the New England String Quartet and Lithuanian violinist Julie Okrusko will light up the library.
On July 18, the Rosewood Chamber Ensemble will perform its “Musical World of John Quincy Adams,” a journey through the life and times of Adams, a flautist and amateur composer.
The Frankhouse Jazz Trio performs July 25, and Aug. 1, pianist Soomi Lee, “will journey through the eras of classical music, with works by Bach, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, and Debussy,” according to the program.
Seven virtuosos from the Nashua Symphony Chamber Players will perform Beethoven's Septet in E Flat Major, scored for clarinet, horn, bassoon, violin, viola, cello and bass on Aug. 8.
Finally, acoustic Latin jazz group Cosa Buena Nueva will explore the music of various cultures Aug. 15.
“We really pride ourselves on hiring good, quality musicians,” Eyman said, “so if you like to hear good quality music you should come to the library.”
