Alice Peck Day hospital president, CEO is stepping down

LEBANON — Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital president and chief executive officer Harry G. Dorman announced Friday his plans to retire May 1, 2013.

Current vice president and chief medical officer Dr. Susan E. Mooney is to take his place.

Dorman, who has more than 35 years of experience as a health care executive, was appointed the hospital's president in 2002.

Dorman, who will be 70, next May, said he planned to retire in the next five years, but said the new federal Health Care Act caused him to seek a successor sooner, so that person could comprehensively oversee all of the changes the federal law will bring.

It is an important transition to undertake since the landscape of the medical industry in New Hampshire will change greatly in the next seven to eight years as a result of the federal Health Care Act, he said.

“This is an interesting transition for us because we don't know what's going to happen with health care in the future,” Dorman said on Monday. “There's some potential signs problems here in New Hampshire.”

New Hampshire has yet to develop a health care exchange pool for consumers to purchase health insurance, as the federal legislation mandates, he said. And a group of New Hampshire hospitals and medical centers are currently suing the state because of the low rate of Medicaid reimbursement, he said. The Health Care Act would result in more consumers using Medicaid.

In Oct. Mooney is to take Dorman's place as president of the hospital. Dorman will stay on as CEO, overseeing the Alice Day Peck's network of care providers and senior living facility. Then in May he plans to hand over his CEO seat to Mooney.

“I think it's a nice and smooth transition,” Dorman said. “And if she thinks I'm hanging around too long, I can leave before May 1.”

The son of missionaries, Dorman was born in the Middle East's Lebanon. It is the commitment of the Alice Day Peck staff to the best care of patients that Dorman will miss most from his job, he said.

He and his wife plan to travel, and he plans to play more rounds of golf, but he is also looking to continue his service to others through volunteer work, he said.

Dorman came to Alice Day Peck in 2002 after 17 years in leadership roles at the UMASS Memorial Medical Center and the Memorial Health System in Worcester, Mass.

He has a bachelor of arts from Amherst College and a masters in health services administration from Cornell University.

He has also served on the board of directors of the NH Hospital Association.

At Alice Day Peck he is credited with attaining the hospital's Critical Access designation, the $4.3 million dollar capital campaign that funded the expansion and renovation of the Robert A. Mesropian Center for Community Care, initiating patient safety programs, the expansion of services including the Elizabeth S. Hughes Care Unit and The Woodlands at Harvest Hill, the development of strategic plans and community initiatives, strengthening APD's relationship with other local health care institutions and the current renovation of the Donald Faulkner Dickey Medical-Surgical wing.

“It's a rarity when you meet someone like Harry whose intelligence, inner strength and approachability make him a truly inspiring leader,” said Michael Harris, chairman of the hospital board of trustees, in a statement. “He embodies a wonderful commitment to his work, his staff and to the vital role that community hospitals play within our health care system.”

Mooney came to Alice Day Peck in 2000 as an obstetrician/gynecologist. Prior to being appointed as the chief medical officer in 2010 she had served as the medical director of quality and after temporarily leaving OB/GYN practice to obtain a masters degree in quality improvement from the Center for the Evaluative Clinical Sciences at Dartmouth College, (now The Dartmouth Institute), and to complete a Veterans Affairs National Quality Scholars Fellowship.

Mooney has a medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and completed her residency at the University of New Mexico Medical Center at Albuquerque. She is certified by the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and is a member of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

In a statement Friday, Dorman said, “Mooney has a great skill for keeping you engaged, holding you accountable and making you feel valued, which will help provide an environment of stability during this time of health care reform.”
