Summer Food Service for kids in need starts next week

OSSIPEE - Southern New Hampshire Services will be offering its Summer Food Service Program to Ossipee, Effingham and North Conway residents 18 and under. There is no registration required and meals will be provided to all children regardless of race, national origin, sex, age or disability.

SNHS Community Health and Nutrition Services Director Kathleen Devlin said the agency administers food through a program funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. There are about 50 service sites across the state. Last year the program served 2,667 meals to youngsters from Southern Carroll County, and a total of more than 57,000 meals through service sites statewide.

Devlin said the Summer Food Service program is an extension of the School Lunch Program.

'When school is out, kids don't often have the opportunity to have well-balanced meals; when they go back to school, we find they are less nutritionally stable than their more affluent peers,' she said.

Healthy breakfasts served at these sites include milk, fruit and a grain, like cereal or a bagel; lunch is one serving of milk, a serving each of fruit and vegetables, one grain product, and one meat or meat alternative, such as a turkey or egg salad sandwich.

'The need is growing,' said Devlin. 'This is our 10th summer running the program, and we have seen increased need. Southern New Hampshire Services started in Hillsborough County Community Action, but we saw the need grow.'

She noted that Carroll County is ranked the fourth-highest county in the state for a factor called 'food insecurity,' which refers to homes where families are going one or more times a week without food, she said. Statewide, 10.9 percent of New Hampshire families rank high for 'food insecurity.'

Children who come for meals are not allowed to take the food out, but rather are encouraged to eat with other kids and in the presence of supervisors.

The meals start next week. Meals will be provided at the following sites and times: Breakfast: Ossipee Central Elementary School, 68 Main St., Center Ossipee, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between July 10 and Aug. 9, 7:45 to 8:15 a.m., and at the Effingham Elementary School, 6 Partridge Cove Road, Effingham, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, July 10 to Aug. 9, from 7:45 to 8:15 a.m.

Lunch: North Conway at 174 Grove St., Monday through Friday, July 3 to Aug. 10 (except July 4), from noon to 12:30 p.m., and at the Effingham Elementary School, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, July 10 to Aug. 9, from 11:30 a.m. to noon.
