Local fireworks: Milford says yes, Freedom no
For the first time in a quarter century, residents of Milford will be able to set off fireworks. Well, legally, anyway.
Selectmen revoked the fireworks ban last month, our correspondent Nancy Bean Foster reported. Said Chairman Gary Daniels, “If the government was to try to protect us from everything that would hurt us, we would have no freedom.”
Good for Daniels and the people of Milford, who can finally celebrate the Fourth with a few small pops, sparkles and bangs. Speaking of Freedom, that town is one of many in New Hampshire that still bans the use of fireworks most of the time. Exceptions include nine days surrounding the July 4 holiday and when the Red Sox win the World Series, Foster reported. Seriously.
That a town called Freedom has a general fireworks ban is disappointing. Many New Hampshire towns ban the small, safe fireworks that are permissible in New Hampshire. Fewer should. It’s hard to let freedom ring when your local government will not let you.
